Cuxhaven lies where the Elbe flows into the North Sea and belonged to Hamburg from the 13th century until 1937. Its landmark is the Kugelbake in the district of Döse, a wooden sea mark about 28 metres high. This is where the Elbe ends and the North Sea begins. The bathing beaches are in the west, in the spa districts of Döse, Duhnen and Sahlenburg.

At the harbour, the Alte Liebe, a former pier, serves as a viewing platform beside the Elbe shipping lane. Next to it stands a lighthouse built by Hamburg between 1802 and 1804. A wind semaphore there shows departing ships the wind conditions on Borkum and Heligoland. Ritzebüttel Castle, once the seat of Hamburg's bailiffs, dates partly from the 14th century. The Windstärke 10 museum covers the history of fishing and finds from shipwrecks.

The mudflats off the town are part of the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Sahlenburg, a visitor centre explains the mudflats and offers guided tours. Ships leave the harbour for Heligoland and the island of Neuwerk.
