Hotzenwald Cross-Country Trail, Stage 1: Over the Dinkelberg into the Hotzenwald
To Hotzenwald Tourist-Info Herrischried
Stage 1
The first stage of the short-distance hiking trail takes us from the Wiesental valley over the highest point in the Hotzenwald forest up to the stage destination of Herrischried. A day's hiking could hardly be more varied: while we start in Schopfheim deep down in the Wiesental valley, after just under an hour we come to a real highlight along the way, Lake Eichener. The temporary lake is a result of the soluble rock layers in the shell limestone of the Dinkelberg. We cross the flat hilly landscape with its orchards and paddocks to Hasel, where the Erdmannshöhle, the most beautiful stalactite cave in the southwest, awaits us. The trail then swings up into the Black Forest, which for us means a physically demanding terrain step over to the Wehratal valley. Then it's time to get down to business: the ascent from the reservoir up to the Hornberg basin with an elevation gain of over 600 meters awaits us. But we are rewarded with the view from the edge of the basin and the silence at the Ödlandkapelle chapel before the final sprint down to Herrischried.
