Rome
486 places to stay. A night costs from about 57 €.
Within Rome lies Vatican City, a state of its own, with St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums. The Lateran Basilica is the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. Santa Maria degli Angeli was built from 1562 to plans by Michelangelo inside a hall of the Baths of Diocletian. The Palazzo Doria Pamphilj shows a private collection with works by Caravaggio, Titian and Raphael.
To the southeast, the Via Appia leads out of the city; its construction began in 312 BC. Along it lie the Catacombs of San Sebastiano and the small church of Domine Quo Vadis. In the portico of Santa Maria in Cosmedin hangs the Bocca della Verità, an ancient stone relief.
