Reykjavík

22 places to stay. A night costs from about 136 €.

Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland. Above the city centre stands Hallgrímskirkja, a Lutheran church whose tower can be seen from far away. The National Gallery of Iceland shows Icelandic art. Safnahúsið, originally built as the national library, is now part of the National Museum.

In the Höfði house, Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev met in 1986. On the Öskjuhlíð hill stands Perlan, opened in 1991 on top of hot-water tanks and with a viewing platform. The Árbær open-air museum grew out of a former farm.

About 40 kilometres east lies Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. On the Reykjanes peninsula near Grindavík is the Blue Lagoon geothermal pool.
