Hamburg is a city-state on the Elbe, about 100 kilometres before the river flows into the North Sea. The Speicherstadt in the port, the world's largest historic warehouse district, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015, together with the Kontorhaus district. The Speicherstadt is home to the Miniatur Wunderland and, in Kaispeicher B, the International Maritime Museum. At the western end of HafenCity, the Elbphilharmonie concert hall has stood since 2017. The town hall on Rathausmarkt is the seat of the city parliament and senate. The main church of St. Michaelis, known as the Michel, has a 132-metre tower. The Hamburger Kunsthalle shows its collection on more than 13,000 square metres.
At the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken lies the sailing ship Rickmer Rickmers, and at the Überseebrücke the cargo ship Cap San Diego, both as museum ships. Planten un Blomen is a 47-hectare park in the city centre. Three times a year, the Hamburger Dom funfair takes place on the Heiligengeistfeld. Hagenbeck Zoo lies in the Stellingen district.
