Berlin is the capital of Germany. On the Spree Island in the historic centre, five museums form the Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Next to it stand Berlin Cathedral by the Lustgarten and the rebuilt Berlin Palace, which today houses the Ethnological Museum among others.

The Brandenburg Gate on Pariser Platz dates from the late 18th century; just north of it, the Bundestag meets in the Reichstag building. On Friedrichstraße, Checkpoint Charlie recalls the border crossing that existed from 1961 to 1990. At 368 metres, the TV Tower at Alexanderplatz is the tallest structure in Germany.

The Kulturforum is home to the Philharmonie and the Gemäldegalerie. In the west of the city stands the Spandau Citadel, a 16th-century fortress. North of Berlin, in Oranienburg, the Sachsenhausen Memorial occupies the site of the former concentration camp.
